According to the legend, the story takes place in the Arab neighborhood of Palermo in 1100 a. C. where there was a beautiful girl who spent her days cultivating and taking care of the plants on her balcony. During this period young women could not go out alone, so the balcony served as a window of freedom. One day, a young and rich Moorish merchant noticed the young woman and was immediately fascinated by her rare beauty and declared his love for her. Flattered and moved by his passion, she gave him her love and virtue. Disgraced and stripped of her virtue, the young girl soon learned that the Moor would return to his town where his wife and children were waiting for him. Blinded by anger and pain, the young woman waited until nightfall for him to fall asleep. She crawled into the kitchen and returned to the bedroom with a knife, where she beheaded her lover so he could never leave her again. The next morning, he transformed his head into a vase, filling it with basil, a symbol of passion and royalty, which adorned the other plants on his balcony. The “vase” grew luxuriant, so much so that it aroused the envy of the inhabitants of the area who ordered the construction of similar vases, with a dark brown shape. In that moment origineted one of the most characteristic symbol of Sicily.
